Finally Some Equipment

Hey there guys,

Today I finally received my Christmas present in the mail! I have finally gotten my hands on the equipment that I have always wanted! So, unlike I usually do, I will focus on some equipment discussion.

As some of you may know I am a huge Timo Boll fan! Since I first began Table Tennis, I always had Timo Boll as my inspiration. I admire his style of playing so much and have always tried to emulate and adopt his style of playing. I had always hoped that I could one day get my hands on either a Timo Boll Spirit or a Timo Boll ALC, but it didn't seem plausible due to my college budget and other limitations. This Christmas, my mother decided that I had been doing a really good job at school and told me I could choose any gift (within the realm or reason of course). I immediately knew what I wanted to get. I have always been curious about Tenergy 05 but had always shyed away due to the price tag. This was an opportunity that I could not pass up, so I went ahead an ordered the same set up that my favorite athlete uses; Timo Boll ALC with Tenergy 05 on both sides.

The first thing that I want to talk about is the blade. The handle is an absolute marvel! I have never held a more comfortable racket handle in my entire life. The wood is smooth and feels very high quality. The design of the handle is superb. Beautiful color scheme and an awesome logo to top it off. I know that this is purely asthetic but I have a personal taste for the presentation of things. Due to my large hands, it isn't unusual for a handle to feel small and uncomfortable. This is especially a problem in the area just beneath the rubber, where the index finger wraps around. I always need to sand this area down, otherwise my finger will start to lose some circulation. This is not a problem at all with this blade. The craftmanship is outstanding, and it better have been with a price tag like that!

The weight of the racket is something that I wanted to discuss separately. I find that a lot of players in my club are always looking for super light blades. There is a man that attends the McAllen table tennis club who makes custom made blades. Recently, two of my club members asked for him to make exceptionally light blades for them. To give you an idea, these blades were probably under 70 grams and felt like a feather compared to my old blade, a 729 Dynasty Super Carbon which is pretty light itself at 83 grams. I personally don't know why you would want to have such a light racket. Although my other blade was pretty light for me, it was offset by the super heavy rubbers I was using. Hurricane 3 Neo 2.1 on both sides made the racket relatively heavy, especially compared to their rackets. Personally speaking, I kind of prefer the feel of a racket with some weight to it. I feel that it is especially important to have some weight in your hand when trying to make some powerful forehand smashes. Don't get me wrong though, I wouldn't suggest having an incredibly heavy racket, so much so that you have difficulty swinging. Instead, I think that a racket should have enough weight that you can do your strokes comfortably. The weight of this racket feels very nice in my hand, it is advertised at 90 grams which is on the heavier side. For me it feels heavy enough to be able to create some power, but light enough for me to be able to move it around quickly.

As for the rubbers...I can't really say much because I haven't had the chance to play yet! I have a friend here in Laredo who is willing to go play with me, the problem is that we don't have anywhere to play. As you can imagine, this is a problem. I will write another blog entry as soon as I get the chance to play with the rubbers. I hope that I have been pretty descriptive with my explanations. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave me a comment, I would really appreciate it!

Also, I ordered a new racket case along with the new racket. I ordered a Yasaka Luna, double racket case. Not much to say about it. It is pretty solid and holds both my rackets, some balls and my cleaner with no problems. It is also asthetically pleasing; black with white accents.

Finally, I also ordered some rubber protector sheets. Inadverdently though, I ordered some Butterfly rubber protectors which I assumed would be compatible with the Butterfly rubbers I ordered, seeing as they were the only Butterfly protectors available. I have never owned a pair of non tacky rubbers, remember the Hurricane 3 I use, so I was pretty surprised that the rubbers were not tacky at all. Sadly this means that I don't have the appropriate rubber protectors for my rubbers. I don't really want to order again. Even if they are pretty cheap, the postage with them is kind of on the expensive side. Any suggestions?

Well anyways, if you got through that wall of text I congratulate you! Like I said, I will get back to you as soon as I play with the new racket. Thanks for reading!

p.s.

If you know something that you think I should know about Tenergy, even if it seems like common sense, please let me know. I would really appreciate it!

weight

Congrats on a beautiful bat.

I have been lucky to play with this blade with most of the tenergy series. I always have said it to be the best match for tenergy.

Yes for me it is too heavy, and it plays best a metre off the table. I find the weight making it hard to play close to the table.

thanks for the lengthy update - great read.

Haha

Good for you wish i could get one.

What?

What do you use to cut ur rubber it seem's the edge is very smooth unlike mine.

Weight

Thank you for reading! I typically do not have a difficult time with the heavier rackets because of my size. I am a relatively tall guy, so moving the racket (despite the weight) doesn't really affect me very much as far as I know. This racket feels like it has some weight behind it, but not to the point where it feels heavy for me. I won't be able to speak definitely until I play with it though!

Cutting

I typically glue and cut my own rubbers, but since I was making such a big investment (and I was already ordering the blade too) and I don't own any water based glue (which is necessary for Tenergy as far as I know), so I just decided to get it done for me at megaspin.com. My work is pretty clean like these rubbers though. I use an x-acto knife for cutting the rubbers. A nice tip that I picked up from some people at my club is to get a small dish with soapy water to dip the knife into. This prevents the rubber and sponge from sticking to the knife, causing jagged edges. You can pick up x-acto knives basically anywhere for pretty cheap, and they are really useful for all sorts of things!

No!

No x-acto knife in Malaysia.....

Instead

Use a sharp pair of stainless steel scissors and cut along the edge of the blade carefully. I still recommend lubricating them with the soapy water, it just makes it easier to cut cleanly. You could alternatively order an xacto knife online if that is an option.

Thanks

Thanks but there's other blades in Malaysia that's super sharp.

stanley knife

don't know if it is just an australian thing but we use stanley knives from a hardware store - you can break off the top part about 10 times, so it's always super sharp.

But me personally don't care at all just use a decent pair of scissors.

Not fussy about appearances just how it plays.

the picture is sexy though :)
