Why do some people have a better backhand than forehand?

table tennis backhand by Boz

You know everyone seems to either eternally be great at one of them but not quite both.

From my perspective backhand is the easier shot. It is shorter, requires less movement and most of us did a backhand in small garage like space. For those that got trained from the start or were exposed to real serious play or at least some good advice, they probably spent quite some time on the big power shot known as the table tennis forehand.

I don't know why, but I know I had a better BH for a while.

Last spring when I was struggling with the T05 on the FH and BH I think my BH was better than my FH for the reasons you ( Boz ) stated above. The stroke is smaller and more compact. BH topspin stroke is like throwing a frisbee. I did not have a good FH stroke back then. My old Ball Whacker ways were hampering my FH. In videos it almost looks like I was pushing the ball rather than swinging at it.

I think another factor is mobility. When I wasn't as mobile I would take more ball with my BH and stay at the center of the table as much as possible. Now that I can move and step around balls I take more balls with my FH to hit harder. I also step around slower chopped balls to loop them back. The point is that mobility gives one more options to use either hand. If your aren't mobile then two thirds of the balls will be BH balls.

Look at PushBlocker. He takes almost everything with his BH. I think he is an extreme case. I think it is because he wants to hit with his LPs as much possible. At the PTTC there is a Korean or Chinese jpen player that has LPs on his FH so he hits almost everything with his FH.

In short, I think two key factors are mobility and the rubbers one is playing with.

why better BH

its all footwork in my view...you dont need to get into position to play a good BH, better if you do off course, but you can hit great shots way easier without it

Frisbee backhand

That is a great analogy, actually you know we never do a forehand frisbee normally right? I did play lots of frisbee before so...

Barkj where you been man?
